Cybersecurity
We’ve partnered with Mississippi State University and Washington State SBDC to create the Cybersecurity Project. The goal of this project is to support business in different ares of data protection:
- Securing Intellectual Property
- Understanding and preparing for potential effects of disruptions in day-to-day operations
- Creating cybersecurity plans to protect online sales, marketing, and online distribution and delivery of products and services
- Establishing secure work environments for teleworking and business operations
The Entrepreneur Center @ Mississippi Development Authority
The mission of The Entrepreneur Center @ Mississippi Development Authority (TEC) is to develop an ecosystem within the state that promotes organic entrepreneurial and innovative development and attracts innovative start-up companies from outside the state. Located in Jackson, TEC’s key role is to facilitate coordinated interactions with entrepreneurs, research universities, state and federal agencies, existing industry and non-profit organizations to develop the most successful entrepreneurial ecosystem possible.
In 2020, TEC conducted 23 workshops in Jackson, with 30 percent held virtually via Zoom or Microsoft Team. The TEC team also hosted five webinars, three of which involved our SCORE partner. Topics included “Simple Steps to Starting a Business”, “Financing & Marketing Concepts” and “Business Practices During COVID-19”.
MSBDC Accelerator Program – Taking the Leap
The Mississippi Small Business Development Center (MS-SBDC) hosts a four-week course entitled “Taking the Leap” to assist Mississippi entrepreneurs to fast-track their business development efforts.
The four weeks of the Taking the Leap program included the following courses:
- Week 1:
The Voice of Your Customer
- Week 2: A Plan for Success-Develop Your Business Model
- Week 3: Cash is King
- Week 4: Pitch Night! Marketing Your Business and Celebrating Your Business Launch
The curriculum covers topics including introducing and understanding the entrepreneurial mindset, empathizing with the customer, utilizing design thinking to better prepare a value proposition, tips on interviewing customers, identifying opportunities using the Ice House Opportunity Discovery Canvas, developing a business model utilizing the Business Model Canvas, understanding the components of and drafting a business plan, the different forms of legal structures for businesses in the state of Mississippi,
the importance of financial management with an introduction to the key financial statements (Income Statement, Cash Flows, Balance Sheet, Sources and Uses of Funds/Startup Costs), the significance of breakeven and appropriate pricing strategies, sources of startup capital, marketing strategies and best practices for digital marketing in small businesses, and effectively pitching your business venture.
